Daily Inspiration: Meet Jesse Hughes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesse Hughes.

Hi Jesse, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born in 1990 and grew up on a dairy farm in New Hampshire and started playing drums at the age of 12. I learned guitar and bass along the way and started writing songs as soon as I could. I dropped out of college after freshman year and moved to Seattle and then Austin playing drums in a band.

In 2014, I moved to a small mountain town in Colorado called Grand Lake and shifted from being a drummer to focusing on writing my own songs and playing all the instruments for my own album. It was there I met my friend Grant who started playing drums with me and we started Waiting Til Three, which I use as my artist name to this day. We were a two-piece rock band for years, moving around and ending up in Denver in 2017. We put out an album and a single before Grant had a baby and had to step aside.

I then turned WT3 into a solo project and recorded a rock album called “Corporate Luncheon” in which I did all the writing, instruments, and singing. Come the pandemic in 2020, I was alone with only an acoustic guitar so I started writing a little different style of songs; more Americana/alt-country/acoustic rock.

I moved to Nashville from Denver in April 2021 and am now putting out my 4th album “Rollin’ Days”. The first single was released on January 28th and two more singles will release before the rest of the album comes out in early April 2022.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been a long road of travel, hard work, heartache, and loss. My father passed away in 2013 when I was 22 and the next year there was a falling out with my band in Austin which fueled my move from there to the mountains of Colorado which led to the shift of my focus from drumming to songwriting.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I write songs about experiences in life and the subsequential outcomes and feelings. Often times I will write words to be a bit more general rather than specific to me, so that listeners can relate and derive their own interpretation of the lyrics. I also like to make my songs short and catchy in melody and rhythm.

I think something that sets me apart is that I write and record all the instruments and vocals myself, which leads to some genre blending of my different influences as a song writer, combined with my influences as a drummer, bassist, guitarist and vocalist.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Go out, go to shows, meet people, follow up with people, support fellow local artists, and rock with people that have like-minded goals.
