Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Derrick.
Hi Andrew, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My musical journey started in my infancy. It was so much a part of my everyday life, I thought everyone loved music & entertainment as much as I did.
I was singing before I could talk and dancing before I could crawl. This journey morphed into me producing/making beats at age 12 and no other way of life or profession was suitable for me once I made my mind up about producing other artists.
I produce music and make beats for specific artists and help develop their signature sound that’s conducive to their truth, persona, & packaging. Hopefully, that’s what makes me identifiable and fun to work with as a producer.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I remember calling studios on Music Row when I was 14/15 and asking to record there. Their answers were identical to each other: “We Don’t Record Rap Music Here”.
I laugh at it now, being how severely the tables have turned. But all struggles in life & work have different meanings and reasons, and a lot of times, we play significant roles in our struggles being initiated. Sometimes, we have to get out of our way.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Consistency is key to most successes in life. In addition to being resilient, creative & critical thinking skills, having financial backing, and networking.
If you’re not having success, there’s a good chance you don’t know what to do, or how to do it or you are very deep in your comfort zone. Meeting new people in the field you want to be in is a breakthrough.
